Can't update HTC One M9 to Marshmallow 6.0

I have an entirely stock / factory Sprint HTC One M9. I bought it used off Amazon (like new condition, highest rated seller, fulfilled by amazon) - arrived in great condition (not a mark on it), booted and activated just fine w/ service with Sprint. I have been trying for the last couple hours or so to update the phone to Marshmallow before my girlfriend starts fiddling with it (it's her phone - I will not likely be able to really get it set up and updated much past now).

The two things I have tried (been reading.. but hesitant to do more without any knowledge)
1) Normal OTA update. Failed w/ red triangle about 25% of the way through. Tried this about 4-5 times so far.
2) Updating via USB. No luck at all, using the official htc site, getting the sprint download for version 3.41.651.4 to get the latest update directly (would post link, but new here). Gives me Error 155 [UNKNOWN ERROR] with this.

I explored trying to use the download mode to update it, but I have no virtual SD card, and I presume I need to unlock the phone to have access to that, and I was hesitating before taking that step since currently the phone does work.

Do I need to flash updated firmware? None of it seems right - I would presume the official stock setups would work. Nothing at all appears wrong with the phone and minus the update, everything works flawlessly. I can give up on updating it, but I was hoping to flash her onto the android revolution rom since how fast it works is pretty important for her. Any help is appreciated. I have no experience with working with phones, but I am very good at following instructions and am a programmer by trade so I can work with a PC just fine.
